Tracker Radio Featured on NBC's Dateline

Dateline was tracking criminals who, under the façade of an internet relationship, ask their partners to purchase items with stolen credit cards and ship the goods overseas to be re-sold in illegal markets.

Because locating boxes after they have been delivered can be near impossible, Dateline investigators hid Tracker’s tracking devices inside the shipments. In this case, the shipment included tennis shoes and an X-box purchased with the stolen credit card.  The package was sent to a small west African country.

Hidden inside of the X-Box was Tracker’s small, but powerful, Surpa Lite transmitter.  The transmitter emits a small signal that can be picked up with a Tracker Maxima receiver.  Through a series of beeps, the Maxima receiver indicates the direction the hidden transmitter.

“Tracker’s core Radio Frequency Directional Finding technology has been used to track nearly everything, from one side of the world to the other.  From wildlife and hunting dogs to drugs, payoffs and stolen merchandise, RF is a reliable, low cost and unobtrusive way to track and locate these items,” said Ken Barber, President of Tracker Radio.

Dateline was on the ground when the shipment arrived.  Unfortunately, the package was moved out of range, as the package wasn’t continuously monitored.

Ken continues, “The movement of the package occurred when it was not being monitored so Dateline was unable to follow the package. However, the technology would allow for the package to be tracked either by constant monitoring or using an aircraft or high point on a hill or tall building.  From the air, the signal can often be received from distances of 20 to 100 miles.  With power like that, there’s never a reason to lose the item you’re tracking.”

Using proper tracking methods, Tracker technology has helped locate stolen packages, equipment taken from construction sites and vehicles.
