from Lubbock, Texas.
Caring for a Caring Cat
Philip Wischkaemper lives next to a fifteen acre wheat field that his cat, Dakota, loves to play in, sometimes twelve to fifteen hours a day. Although Philip encourages Dakota to explore and exercise during the day, he quickly noticed that Dakota, “Especially on the beautiful warm Texas nights, just didn’t want to come in.” Wanting to keep him in at night to protect him from any danger or possible predators, it was important that Phillip find a solution that would keep Dakota safe for the special community work that he does on the weekends.
Born in a barn to a feral mother, Dakota was nursed by a young girl and was only six weeks old when Phillip adopted him. Suspecting Dakota’s special nature, Philip exposed Dakota to all kinds of situations and people from pet stores to the office. After a year, Dakota was evaluated, sanctioned, and insured to become a therapy cat. He now spends every weekend interacting with the children at University Medial Center in Lubbock, Texas who look forward to his visits and the time that they get to spend with this special cat.
With the intention of allowing Dakota freedom during the day and to protect him for his special work, Philip began testing out tracking systems. Frustrated with other products, Phillip found Tracker’s Cat Traxx, “The other brands were too bulky and less accurate. The Tracker was compact, accurate, and easy to use.”
According to Philip, the key to the success of the Cat Traxx was not only its technology, but the customer service that came with it, “When I ordered the Cat Traxx the customer service representative took the time to emphasize the importance of practicing with the unit before I put it on Dakota. When I first received the unit, I spent a few hours finding the transmitter after a family member would hide it.” Because of his few minutes of patience and practice, Phillip was able to walk right up to Dakota the first day that he put his Cat Traxx collar on.
Not only is Philip able to let Dakota out in the morning with confidence knowing that his Cat Traxx collar will keep him safe but he has also discovered a unique feature of his system, “When I’m tracking Dakota and I get close enough that he can hear the chirp of the receiver, he responds to it like it were a call and comes to me immediately.”
With the Cat Traxx system, Philip can let Dakota play like any other cat, but knows that he will always come home and be able to do what he loves best, visiting and helping his friends at the hospital.
