Pet Tracking Stories

My wife and I acquired a female Siberian Husky puppy,
a very sociable and intelligent breed of dog. A well known
trait of these beautiful animals is their stubbornness to listen
and their desire to just take off and run (sometimes for miles).

Our Little Girl

I’d like to extend a very big THANK YOU to Tracker for manufacturing a product that lives up to its published specifications.

When I began to research systems for tracking dogs, I had very specific requirements. The system that attaches to the dog had to be small and lightweight, yet rugged and weatherproof, operate continuously for weeks without changing batteries, transmit at least 2 miles in mountainous terrain, and be as maintenance free as possible. The handheld receiver had to be compact and simple enough to learn and understand. The specifications for the Tracker Supra Lite fit those needs and performed up to those standards under very difficult and stressful situations. Here’s my story:

My wife and I acquired a female Siberian Husky puppy, a very sociable and intelligent breed of dog. A well known trait of these beautiful animals is their stubbornness to listen and their desire to just take off and run (sometimes for miles). With today’s electronic interactive training collars, I was able to train her to be constantly off leash, but if allowed to be outside and if unattended, she would wander off. I couldn’t risk losing my wife’s “little girl” so I needed a way to find her if she got away.

The Tracker Supra Lite fit the bill perfectly. I purchased the system and quickly went about learning how to use it. It was easy; even my electronically challenged wife learned quickly. One of us would take the dog “somewhere?” on a walk, the other would track and find her; sort of a long range game of “hide and seek”.

We quickly became competent and confident. To make the collar system fit our needs, I contacted the Tracker engineering department and with their help I integrated the Supra Lite transmitter and antennas into the dog’s harness. The transmitter is out of the way, attached underneath the harness directly behind her front legs; and the antennas are attached to the underside of the harness straps that come up on both sides of her torso (out of sight). She wears the harness whenever she goes outside.

Battery life is as advertised at about 850 hours, but I change it once a month before I get the low battery warning.

It’s now been two years and I’ve had to track her and find her 4 times, all during the first year. The stress of a “lost” dog can be overwhelming, so ease of operation and a quick find are imperative. There was never a doubt which direction to go and with some experience you can discern distances from signal strength. The longest “find” was 2 miles in heavily wooded hills. She hasn’t “taken off” in over a year so maybe she’s finally got it out of her system, but she still wears the collar; and we still practice hide and seek. The most important aspect of the entire and ongoing experience is peace of mind for us and extended freedom for a wandering dog.
